SUVA, April 27 (Xinhua) -- The Fiji Police Force will send for the first time a Formed Police Unit to the United Nations and regional peacekeeping missions after they signed a Letter of Agreement with the United States to assist the training and deployment of Fijian Police Peacekeepers.

The agreement was signed Friday by Fiji's Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho and the United States Embassy's Charge d'affaires Michael Goldman to establish and support a project designed to assist the Fijian government's training and deployment of police peacekeepers, including Formed Police Units and Individual Police Officers.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sitiveni Qiliho said this has come after Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made a commitment to the UN and they will now have to relook at their training to meet that commitment.

Training for the deployment of a formed unit will start next week. 120 to 150 officers would be trained for the missions and the first batch will only be deployed after an assessment has been conducted on the training processes.
