China loses shootout to France but secures division survival in women's ice hockey worlds

SHENZHEN, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Host China delivered a spirited performance but fell 3-2 to France in a dramatic shootout at the 2025 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A on Thursday -- a narrow loss which saw China secured its place in the division for next season.

Following a win over the Netherlands on Wednesday, China entered the match ranked fifth in the group, two points ahead of the winless Dutch side. With a victory over France, China would not only secure its spot in the division but also keep its hopes alive for potential promotion.

China got off to a dream start in front of the home crowd, taking the lead just 27 seconds into the first period. Forward Fang Xin capitalized on a pass from Qu Yue and fired a powerful shot into the net.

France responded in the 8th minute with a composed and structured offensive play. Chloe Aurardnetted the equalizer on a rebound, punishing a defensive lapse in front of the Chinese goal.

However, China regained the lead in the 17th minute. Du Sijia's shot was cleverly deflected into the net by Zhang Mengying, giving China a 2-1 advantage by the end of the first period.

The second period was marked by fierce battles and tight defense from both sides, but neither team managed to find the back of the net.

With just three minutes remaining in regulation, France pulled its goaltender in a final push, sending six attackers onto the ice. The strategy paid off as Lea Villiot quickly found the back of the net, forcing the match into overtime.

After a scoreless extra time, the match was decided in a dramatic shootout. Estelle Duvin, France's eighth shooter, netted the winning goal.

Despite the shootout loss, China earned a crucial point, bringing its total to four and successfully kept its place in Division I Group A.

"I'm happy and proud to be the solid support behind my teammates, allowing them to focus on attacking with confidence," said 19-year-old Chinese goaltender Zhan Jiahui, who made an impressive 48 saves. "From the first match to the fourth, I've seen the team grow, and that makes me feel truly gratified."

Earlier on Thursday, Denmark recorded its second win in four matches by 2-0 over Slovakia, while Austria edged past the Netherlands 3-2 in overtime, securing its promotion to the Top Division.

China will take on Denmark on Saturday, with France meeting Austria, and Slovakia vs. the Netherlands.  ■
