CAIRO, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Egypt condemned on Saturday a failed attempt to "assassinate" Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during a mass rally in the capital Addis Ababa.

"Egypt totally rejects any attempts to threaten security and stability in Ethiopia," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Three people were killed and some 164 others injured in a bomb explosion targeting a mass rally in support of the Ethiopian prime minister in the capital.

Ethiopia's official ENA news agency reported that the explosion disrupted the rally shortly after Ahmed addressed the crowd at Meskel Square.

The Foreign Ministry said Egypt is confident that the Ethiopian government is able to maintain security and stability in the country, affirming that it will work jointly with Ethiopia to achieve aspirations of their peoples.

Calling the incident a "carefully orchestrated" attempt to disrupt the peaceful rally, Ahmed said investigations are underway to apprehend perpetrators.

The mass rally was organized to celebrate the achievements by the Ahmed administration over the past two months.

Ahmed, who took office in April, has made various decisions that mainly aim to bring about peace and unity among ethnic groups in his country.
