Singapore stocks close 0.79 pct lower

SINGAPORE, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.79 percent or 25.19 points to close at 3173.46.

A total of 1.28 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 727.42 million Singapore dollars (about 537.24 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 242 to 142.

The STI index went up 0.48 percent or 15.14 points to close at 3198.65 last Friday.
