SYDNEY, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Light towers at the University of Sydney will soon be powered by a groundbreaking new energy storage platform comprised of low-cost zinc-bromide battery technology.

Developed by Gelion Technologies and University of Sydney Professor Thomas Maschmeyer, the system called Gelion Endure, is considered a far cheaper and safer technology compared with lithium ion batteries.

This is because zinc-bromide power storage does not require active cooling and can be activated remotely without the need of on-site servicing.

"During the next year, the University will be incorporating Gelion battery cells on campus to power mobile light towers to improve safety after dark, helping to build the foundation for a more sustainable campus," said Maschmeyer, the company's chairman on Thursday.

First conceived in 2014, Maschmeyer believes zinc-powered battery storage technology is set to play a major role in the future of the world's energy storage market.

"As the global economy switches from fossil fuels to renewable energy, storage systems will become increasingly important," he said.
