LUSAKA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Zambia has completed its tenure as a member of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council and has expressed satisfaction with its contribution, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Susan Sikaneta, Zambia's ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the AU, said the country has concluded its three-year tenure which started in 2016, with Lesotho taking over its position on a rotational basis.

The Zambian envoy said the country used its tenure to push for a number of issues such as the development of the AU Master Roadmap on Silencing the Guns by the year 2020, which was crafted in the Zambian capital of Lusaka.

She said as soon as Zambia became a member of the AU Security Council, silencing guns by 2020 was one of the issues it brought to the council.

Another major achievement during Zambia's tenure in the Security Council was to push for the implementation of the "Africa Amnesty Month" for the surrender and collection of illicit weapons, which is designated for September every year, according to a statement from the Zambia embassy in Ethiopia.
