FARAH, Afghanistan, May 13 (Xinhua) -- At least six Taliban militants were killed, and three government troop soldiers and nine militants were wounded after clashes flared up in western Afghan province of Farah overnight, local police said on Monday.

"The clashes occurred after Taliban militants attacked defensive posts in two villages of Pusht Rod district, north of provincial capital Farah city. Security forces repelled the attackers and defused two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) after the fighting," provincial police spokesman Muhibullah Muhib told Xinhua.

The province, 695 km west of the country's capital Kabul, has been the scene of heavy clashes between security forces and the Taliban for long.

Fighting rages across the war-torn country and clashes between security forces and the Taliban have been continuing in at least 25 out of the country's 34 provinces since early April when Taliban launched a yearly rebel offensive.

Fighting between government forces and Taliban fighters often gets intense in spring and summer as the seasons are locally branded as the fighting time of the year.

The Taliban has not made a comment on the report so far.
