MOSCOW, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Washington has not yet requested a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump at the G20 summit in Japan's Osaka in June, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

Peskov told reporters that the Kremlin had noted Trump's statement on Monday that he intended to meet Putin on the sidelines of the Osaka summit.

However, in the absence of an official request, there is no understanding that a meeting between the two presidents will indeed take place, he said.

Peskov said Putin will meet U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on Tuesday after the top U.S. diplomat finishes talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Putin is likely to discuss Russia-U.S. relations, strategic stability and disarmament, Iran, Syria, Venezuela and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula with Pompeo, the spokesman said.

In early May, Trump spoke over the phone with Putin for more than an hour, a conversation Trump touted later in a tweet as "very good."

Trump canceled a formal meeting with Putin in Buenos Aires in December last year, citing mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
